Stroke Rehabilitation

Stroke is a significant medical event that can have profound effects on a person’s physical, cognitive and emotional well-being. A stroke occurs when there is a disruption of blood flow to the brain, either through blockage (ischemic stroke) or rupture of blood vessels (hemorrhagic stroke).

These events can lead to various impairments, such as paralysis, speech difficulties, memory issues and emotional changes.

At INTEGRIS Health Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation, we offer specialized care to help individuals recover and regain as much independence as possible after a stroke. The stroke rehabilitation program is CARF-accredited, ensuring top-quality standards. This three-year certification showcases our program excellence.

Rehabilitation Goals

  • Pain management: Addressing any physical discomfort caused by the stroke, such as muscle spasms or joint pain.
  • Cognitive recovery: Working to improve cognitive functions such as memory, attention, and executive function.
  • Physical function: Maximizing mobility, balance, strength, and motor skills, addressing issues like paralysis or coordination problems.
  • Psychosocial adjustment: Supporting emotional and mental health, helping individuals cope with the psychological changes that may result from stroke.
  • Return to daily activities: Helping the individual regain the ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs), such as dressing, eating, bathing and working.

Treatment and Rehabilitation Process

The first phase focuses on stabilizing the patient’s condition, managing immediate life-threatening issues such as brain swelling or bleeding, and ensuring the patient’s safety and comfort.

Once stabilized, rehabilitation begins with physical and occupational therapy to address mobility, strength and function.

Cognitive rehabilitation focuses on improving memory, attention and problem-solving. Speech therapy supports communication and swallowing recovery. At INTEGRIS Health Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation, the majority of our therapists are certified brain injury specialists (CBIS).

Emotional and psychological support is essential during stroke recovery. Our counseling services provide a space for patients and families to process their experiences and adjust to life after a stroke.

Educating family members and caregivers about stroke recovery, caregiving strategies and environmental adjustments for a safe home environment is critical to ensuring successful long-term outcomes.

As recovery progresses, the rehabilitation team focuses on preparing patients for the transition from inpatient care to outpatient services or home care. This includes setting up follow-up treatments, support services and ensuring the patient has the tools to continue recovery independently.
