Child Life Foundations of Play Program

This program is currently on hold and not accepting applications.

Thank you for your interest in our foundations of play program. The Foundations of Play Program is a minimum 100-hour experience for students 18 years or older, interested in a career in Child Life or other hospital related field. This program provides students with the opportunity to work with children and families in the hospital setting. The program offers students the opportunity to interact one-on-one and virtually with children over a minimum of 13-week period, set up as two four-hour shift per week.

Hours completed through the Foundations of Play program can be used toward the hours of experience interacting with children in the hospital setting required for child life practicum applications.

  • Gain knowledge of the different types of play and how to implement them in your interactions. 
  • Become familiar with the hospital environment and areas to engage in play. 
  • Implement at least one in-hospital virtual event via Microsoft Teams.

**It is the responsibility of the student to pay for and complete all tests and screenings listed above.

Once you complete the application and all the requirements, you will need to make an appointment with Employee Health to have your records reviewed and get the TB skin test completed. You must let Employee Health know that you are a student working with Child Life. Employee Health will sign off on the application once the TB skin test process and health records have been completed is verified. Once the Child Life Department receives your completed application from Employee Health, the documents will be reviewed to determine acceptance and scheduling.

We offer the Foundations of Play Program year-round.

Students will participate in a minimum 100 hours.

  • Two 4-hour shift per week. 

*Shift One: Monday or Thursday

*Shift Two: Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday

Students will experience play opportunities with children in person and virtually. 

  • Foundations of Play Program students will be supervised by a Certified Child Life Specialist. 

Students will have monthly assignments, participate in weekly virtual events and implement a virtual event that will be discussed and planned with the Certified Child Life Specialist and Gaming and Technology Specialist.
