Sewing Project Ideas, Guidelines, and Patterns

Guidelines for Sewing Projects:

  • All sewing materials must be new, from a smoke-free environment, and free of pet hair.
  • All handmade cloth or fabric items should be washed in a non-fragrance detergent and dried completely prior to creating the items.
        - Complete drying is very important because damp items can promote growth of germs.
        - A home washing machine and dryer are adequate.
  • Completed items should be individually packaged in an unscented, plastic, sealed bag to keep items from collecting dust, pet hair, and other allergens.

Sewing Projects

Beads of Courage bags are given to children who are enrolled in the Beads of Courage Program. This program helps children and families document their medical journey through handcrafted beads received from Beads of Courage. Children acquire hundreds of beads and need a Beads of Courage bag to store and collect all their beads. You can help children of all ages, including infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, by creating bags with brightly colored fabrics, patterns, sports themes, and popular characters.

Cloth dolls are created using solid colored fabric that match skin tones. The cloth dolls are used throughout the hospital environment as teaching and expressive tools for children. These simple dolls are one of the Child Life Specialists’ strongest allies as they work to promote emotional health and well-being for sick and injured children.

We also need colorful gowns for the dolls that are appealing to children of all ages, even teens!

Patients greatly appreciate blankets while they are at our hospital. Brightly colored fabrics, patterns, sports themes, and popular characters are the most popular for children and teens. We always need blankets for our school-age and teen patients. 3' X 4' is the suggested size blanket for this age group.

Patients greatly appreciate pillowcases while they are at our hospital.  Brightly colored fabrics, patterns, sports themes, and popular characters are the most popular for children and teens.
