Pulmonary Hypertension

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is high blood pressure in the lungs that weakens the heart and disrupts blood flow. It can occur without a clear cause or be associated with autoimmune diseases, lung issues or heart conditions. The right ventricle works harder, causing it to enlarge and weaken, resulting in PH symptoms.

At INTEGRIS Health Pulmonary Hypertension Center, our experienced caregivers are committed to treating and managing PH. Our center is Oklahoma's only nationally accredited Pulmonary Hypertension Care Center, leading the way in PH care.

Understanding Pulmonary Hypertension

Symptoms can vary and may resemble other conditions; consult your doctor for an accurate diagnosis.

  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Dizziness
  • Fainting spells
  • Swelling in the ankles, legs and belly
  • Blue or gray lips and skin
  • Chest pain
  • Racing pulse
  • Trouble getting enough air
  • Heart palpitations

Pulmonary hypertension is often missed during routine exams and can be mistaken for other heart and lung conditions in later stages. It is diagnosed by exclusion through tests like:

  • Cardiac Catheterization: Evaluates heart blood flow, coronary blockages, heart defects and valve function using a catheter from the groin or arm to the heart.
  • Echocardiogram: Uses sound waves to create images of heart structure and function.
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG): Records heart's electrical activity, detects arrhythmias and heart muscle damage.
  • Perfusion Lung Scan: Identifies blood clots in lung arteries and assesses lung function.
  • Pulmonary Function Tests: Measure lung air movement efficiency.

Accurate diagnosis is crucial for treating pulmonary hypertension due to its various types. Like infections, each type requires specific treatment based on its cause. Treatments can include:

  • Anticoagulants: Medication used to decrease the tendency of the blood to clot and permit blood to flow more freely.
  • Balloon Pulmonary Angioplasty (BPA): A minimally invasive procedure that uses a balloon to open blood vessels that have been narrowed or blocked.
  • Calcium Channel Blockers (Vasodilators): Medication used to improve the heart’s ability to pump blood.
  • Diuretics: Medication used to decrease the amount of fluid in the body and reduce the amount of work for the heart.
  • Drugs: Medication used to help lower blood pressure in the lungs and improve heart performance.
  • Supplemental Oxygen: Delivered through nasal prongs or a mask if breathing becomes difficult.
