Cardiac electrophysiology studies the heart's electrical system, which regulates heartbeat speed and pattern. Issues in this system can lead to arrhythmias, or irregular heartbeats.
Arrhythmias are classified by their location. Atrial arrhythmias are in the upper heart and ventricular arrhythmias are in the lower heart. Symptoms vary; some people are unaware, while others feel mild or noticeable changes. Commonly reported arrhythmia symptoms include:
Ablation
This procedure treats a fast heart rate by selectively destroying heart cells responsible for the electrical pathway, correcting the rhythm.
Cardioversion
A cardiologist uses electrical paddles to shock the heart into the normal rhythm.
Pacemakers and ICDs
Pacemakers send impulses to help the heart pump correctly. ICDs monitor the heart and deliver shocks to correct unsafe rhythms or arrhythmias.
