The Heart of a Healthier Oklahoma

LVAD

A left ventricular assist device (LVAD) is an implantable device that helps a weakened heart pump blood by using an electric pump powered by a cable exiting the abdomen. Wearable batteries connect to a controller that operates the pump and monitors its functions.

INTEGRIS Health Advanced Cardiopulmonary Care provides heart assist devices to help end-stage heart failure patients live more active lives. We are dedicated to enhancing patient outcomes through innovative technology and compassionate care.

LVAD Candidates

The assist device is designed to meet the needs of two types of heart patients:

Bridge-to-transplant: These patients have an LVAD device implanted while awaiting a heart transplant, providing critical support in the interim.

Destination therapy: For patients not eligible for heart transplants, the LVAD supports heart function and significantly improves their quality of life for the remainder of their lives.

LVAD Devices

The type of LVAD used depends on a comprehensive evaluation of the patient’s heart function, overall health, symptoms and needs. Your provider will determine which LVAD is best after performing tests like echocardiograms, cardiac catheterization and blood work. The devices used at INTEGRIS Health include:

More About LVAD

Explore the benefits, what it's like living with the device and whether it's the right option for you.

Longer life expectancy: Patients with an LVAD generally have a longer lifespan than those receiving only medical therapy.

Improved quality of life: LVAD patients typically regain strength and resume pre-heart failure activities.

Fewer symptoms of heart failure: Before receiving an LVAD, patients experienced symptoms like shortness of breath, fluid overload and fatigue. The device alleviates these issues, enhancing patient well-being and reducing hospitalizations.

Life with an LVAD allows for exercise, travel and other predevice activities, with minimal restrictions. Regular follow ups at our LVAD clinic will monitor your recovery. A caregiver must care for the exit site on your abdomen to prevent infection. You should also manage your battery power and equipment maintenance.

Staying healthy is crucial before and after the LVAD implant. This involves:

  • Quitting tobacco
  • Drinking alcohol in moderation
  • Avoiding illegal drugs
  • Eating a healthy diet
  • Exercising as tolerated
  • Taking prescribed medications
  • Completing lab work as ordered

Your heart is our passion, and we know how important it is to live your healthiest lives. Learn more about LVADs to make an informed decision.
