ECMO

ECMO

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) supports patients with severe heart or lung failure due to conditions like heart attacks, cardiac surgery, pulmonary embolism, near drowning or respiratory diseases.

The therapy involves extracting blood through a tube in the groin or neck, oxygenating it via a membrane, and returning it to the body, allowing the heart and lungs to rest and heal. Once recovery occurs, ECMO support is gradually withdrawn.

INTEGRIS Health is the first in the state to offer a dedicated life support program for adults facing critical heart or respiratory failure.

Our ECMO specialists use heart-lung machines to provide essential care for those with serious illnesses. ECMO is also used for patients awaiting transplants, recovering from illness or preparing for high-risk surgery.

What is ECMO?

ECMO provides both cardiac and respiratory support to patients whose heart and/or lungs are so severely diseased or damaged that they can no longer serve their function, perhaps after a heart attack, cardiac surgery, or lung-related issues such as flu or pneumonia.

Patient Story: Lloyd Vines

Lloyd Vines had severe abdominal pain, leading to a twisted bowel diagnosis. After surgery, he faced septic shock and reduced heart function, placing him in a coma for five weeks. Vines relied on Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) for heart and lung support. The ECMO team at INTEGRIS Health provided life-saving care, moving him to the Nazih Zuhdi Transplant Institute.
