Breastfeeding can be rewarding, but it's not always easy. Many new moms face challenges that leave them feeling overwhelmed. Whether you’re experiencing pain, worrying about milk supply or a clogged duct, you don't have to go through it alone.

Our lactation consultants at INTEGRIS Health can make your breastfeeding experience easier and healthier for both you and your baby. We also host support groups at different locations and times throughout Oklahoma City for mothers to connect and share their experiences or seek advice.

Common breastfeeding challenges

What to know: Breastfeeding problems are extremely common, especially during the first few weeks after delivery. While every woman's experience is different, certain issues appear frequently among new mothers. Early intervention can prevent small challenges from becoming bigger problems.

  • Clogged or plugged ducts affect many nursing mothers and can lead to serious complications if left untreated.
  • Sore nipples often result from poor latching techniques or frequent feedings.
  • Low milk supply concerns are common, though many mothers produce adequate milk.
  • Breast engorgement can make feeding uncomfortable for both mother and baby.

Clogged ducts occur when a milk duct becomes blocked, causing discomfort and potentially leading to infection. The blockage prevents milk from flowing properly through the breast tissue.

  • Symptoms include a tender lump in the breast, localized pain, redness or a warm spot on the breast.
  • You might also notice decreased milk flow from the affected area.

Prevention strategies can help reduce your risk of developing clogged ducts. Alternate breastfeeding positions during each feeding session to ensure thorough emptying of all areas of the breast. Avoid tight-fitting bras or clothing that presses against breast tissue. Feed your baby frequently and watch for proper latching to maintain good milk flow.

How a lactation consultant can help

Key benefits: Lactation consultants are certified health care professionals who specialize in breastfeeding support and education. They provide personalized guidance tailored to your specific situation and can identify the root cause of feeding difficulties. Working with a consultant early can save you weeks of frustration and discomfort.

  • Professional assessment can pinpoint exactly what's causing breastfeeding difficulties.
  • Customized plans address your unique challenges and goals.
  • In-person consultations and demonstrations help you master proper techniques quickly.
  • Ongoing guidance ensures continued success as you and your baby adapt.

Personalized assessment begins with a thorough evaluation of your breastfeeding experience. A consultant observes your feeding sessions to identify issues with positioning, latching or milk transfer. They also review your medical history and discuss any concerns you have about milk supply or breast health.

Practical support extends beyond basic breastfeeding advice. Consultants provide recommendations on breast pump selection and proper usage techniques. They offer guidance on safe milk storage practices and teach you how to maintain good breast health throughout your nursing journey. Many consultants also help coordinate care with your health care team when medical intervention is needed.

Dealing with clogged ducts the right way

The essentials: Clogged ducts require immediate attention to prevent progression to mastitis, a serious breast infection. The B.A.I.T. method (Breast rest, Anti-inflammatory medications, Ice and Tylenol) provides a systematic approach to managing symptoms. Continue breastfeeding or pumping frequently to help clear the blocked duct naturally.

  • Breast rest involves avoiding excessive manipulation while still maintaining regular feeding schedules.
  • Advil and Tylenol help manage pain and reduce inflammation in the affected area.
  • Ice application can provide relief from swelling and discomfort.
  • Gentle massage techniques directed toward lymph nodes can help improve drainage.

Massage techniques should be performed gently to avoid further irritation. Use light strokes moving from the affected area toward your armpit, where lymph nodes are located. Apply gentle pressure while your baby nurses or while pumping to encourage milk flow through the blocked area.

Warning signs of mastitis include fever, chills and flu-like symptoms that develop suddenly. Red streaking on the breast, severe pain that worsens and feeling generally unwell are serious symptoms.

  • Contact your health care provider immediately if you experience these signs, as antibiotic treatment may be necessary.

Setting yourself up for breastfeeding success

Building foundations: Preparation before delivery sets the stage for a successful breastfeeding experience. Working with a lactation consultant during pregnancy allows you to learn positioning techniques and develop realistic expectations. Early preparation helps you feel more confident when your baby arrives.

  • Breastfeeding classes are offered monthly and one-on-one prenatal breastfeeding consultations can also be scheduled with a lactation professional.

Nutrition and rest play a role in maintaining adequate milk supply. Eat a balanced diet with plenty of protein, healthy fats and complex carbohydrates. Stay well-hydrated by drinking water throughout the day, especially during and after feeding sessions.

Post birth support and recovery
is essential for new mothers adjusting to breastfeeding a newborn. Rest whenever possible to help your body recover from delivery and produce milk effectively.

Also, please call 405-657-3250 if you’re experiencing any of the following as a mother:

  • Painful or cracked nipples
  • Engorgement
  • Illness or the need for surgery

  • Returning to work
  • Suspected breast infection or inflammation
