How Long Does a Cortisone Injection Last?

Cortisone shots are a well-known treatment for managing pain and inflammation. These anti-inflammatory injections are often recommended for joint pain, tendinitis, bursitis and arthritis. While effective, they might leave you wondering, “How long does a cortisone shot last?” In this blog, we break down everything you need to know about cortisone injections, their duration, frequency and ways to optimize your treatment.

We speak to Kristin Strong, a board-certified physician assistant with INTEGRIS Health Medical Group Orthopedics Central, to learn more.

“A cortisone injection can be the right non-surgical option for patients to treat pain,” Strong says. “As a provider, I am passionate about helping patients regain their mobility, live without pain and return to the activities they love.”

What is a cortisone injection?

What to know: Cortisone shots, also known as corticosteroid injections, deliver powerful anti-inflammatory medication directly to the affected area. This targeted approach makes them efficient at reducing swelling and alleviating pain associated with inflammatory conditions. They can be used to treat a variety of issues.

  • Joint pain, particularly in the knees, shoulders and hips might be treated with a cortisone shot.
  • Conditions like tendinitis and bursitis could benefit from cortisone injections.
  • A corticosteroid injection may help arthritis and related chronic inflammatory conditions.

How long does a cortisone shot provide relief?

The duration of pain relief from a cortisone shot varies widely. For most people, the effects last anywhere from six weeks to six months. The length of relief depends on several factors.

  • Type of condition: Acute inflammation may respond more effectively, while chronic conditions like advanced arthritis might see shorter relief periods.
  • Injection site: Shots given in larger joints, such as the knees or hips, often provide longer-lasting relief than shots given in smaller areas, such as the wrists or ankles.
  • Each patient’s unique factors: General health, age and the severity of the underlying condition all impact how long the shot is effective.

For some with temporary conditions, a single cortisone shot can resolve the issue entirely. Unfortunately, for chronic issues, symptoms often return over time.

Factors that influence relief duration

Key points: While cortisone injections are effective, their longevity varies depending on certain factors.

The nature of the condition will always affect how long you notice relief.

  • Acute issues like localized inflammation may respond almost immediately, offering long-term relief.
  • Chronic conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis or severe osteoarthritis, may require follow-up treatments.

Where the injection is administered has unique factors, such as size and amount of circulation, which will affect the duration of relief.

  • Larger joints, like the knee or shoulder, tend to hold relief longer compared to smaller joints or tendons.
  • Tendons and small joints often get shorter periods of relief due to limited circulation.

An individual’s health and lifestyle play a critical role in lasting relief. Everyone has a different health background as well as different lifestyle habits. Those differences will affect how cortisone works within your body.

  • Younger, healthier patients often experience longer relief.
  • Physical therapy, weight management and low-impact exercises can extend the benefits of your shot.

Small adjustments to your lifestyle and working closely with your health care provider can maximize the duration of relief.

How often can you get a cortisone shot?

Cortisone injections are highly effective but should be used sparingly to avoid side effects. Your health care provider will make specific recommendations. There are a few common rules most providers will follow.

  • A maximum of one injection every three months in the same joint.
  • No more than three cortisone shots per year for a single site.

Overuse of cortisone shots can lead to a number of complications.

  • Cartilage thinning.
  • Tendon weakening, which may increase the risk of tendon rupture (common in areas like the Achilles tendon).
  • Bone density reduction over time (osteoporosis).

Sticking to recommended intervals ensures safe and effective use of this treatment without compromising long-term joint health.

Risks and limitations of cortisone shots

Why it's complicated: While cortisone injections provide relief for many, they come with risks and limitations, especially with prolonged or frequent use.

  • Mild side effects: Pain can occur at the injection site, along with skin discoloration or localized swelling.
  • Long-term risks: Repeated use may contribute to complications like cartilage loss, bone thinning or infections in the joint.
  • Symptom management, not a cure: Cortisone shots treat inflammation but don’t address the root causes of chronic issues like arthritis. That’s why complementary treatments, such as physical therapy, are often recommended

For example: Overuse of cortisone shots has been linked to poor outcomes with conditions like "tennis elbow" due to localized tendon weakening. Always discuss risks and alternatives with your provider to ensure it’s the right option.

Tips for optimizing cortisone treatment

Tips: Want to make the most out of a cortisone shot? Follow these tips to maximize relief and protect your joint health.

Combine treatment with physical therapy

Engage in exercises or work with a physical therapist to strengthen the area and maintain mobility. This helps alleviate pressure and extends the benefits of the injection.

Manage your weight

Excess weight puts additional stress on your joints. Maintaining a healthy weight reduces strain and maximizes the relief from cortisone treatment.

Communicate with your health care provider

Regularly discuss your pain levels and treatment goals. This helps create a clear plan for safely managing symptoms over time.

Find the relief that fits your needs

Cortisone injections can be a highly effective way to manage inflammation and chronic joint pain. However, it is critical to understand how long a cortisone shot lasts, how often you can get a cortisone shot safely and what steps you can take to support your joint health.

To learn whether cortisone injections are right for you, schedule a consultation with a trusted health care provider. At INTEGRIS Health, we offer comprehensive care through our network of hospitals and specialty clinics. Whether you need help with pain management, physical therapy or advanced treatments, we’re here to support your health goals.

How to Keep Your Bones Strong and Why it Matters

Bones aren’t static. They’re changing all the time, breaking down old bone and making new, healthy bone. When we’re younger, new bone grows fast. It outpaces the breaking down of old bone, resulting in increased bone mass. We explain how to keep your bones strong and why it's important.

Reducing Pain Through Physical Therapy

There isn’t a cure for chronic pain, so many times, patients will turn to medications for chronic pain relief, such as over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or opioids. But more conservative treatments such as physical therapy can help without being tied to as many side effects as medications – long-term NSAID use can cause gastrointestinal problems and prescription painkillers have addictive properties.
